Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies - Feature

I’m glad these Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies were easy to make because I had a lot going on in my personal life when I made them on April 29th this year, which was a Sunday. It was important that I made these cookies that particular weekend because April 30th is National Oatmeal Cookie Day! I certainly wanted to be ready to share oatmeal cookies on this day!  Grandma Bess’ Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies were the best recipe to honor this occasion!

As I’ve been doing over the last six months or so, I made my cookies and took my pictures  The big difference this time was that I was starting a new job the very next day! Yes! Monday, April 30th, 2018 I started a new full-time job. To be honest, I had mixed feeling about taking the job because I wasn’t quite sure how it was going to affect my dedication to Cookies by Bess. I was torn…but in the end, i took the job and started on National Oatmeal Cookie Day!

On that April 30th, I got up early and went to work. At some point during the day, I took a break and posted my Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookie pictures on Instagram. It wasn’t until 5 weeks later that I realized I hadn’t written up my blog! So, I’m doing it now…better late than never ?

Cookies by Bess has several oatmeal type cookies, but only one traditional oatmeal cookies recipe and these Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies really live up to their name! They are everything you think of when thinking of oatmeal cookies…they are soft and chewy with just the right amount of crunch around the edges, they have chewy raisins, crunchy nuts, and all the spices you are used to mixed together with quick rolled oats. If you are looking for a good, traditional cookie to fill your cookie jar, Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies are certainly it!

The only real change I made to this recipe was to use butter instead of shortening. I also added an additional ¼ cup of flour because my test batch cookies spread too much while baking. The extra flour solved the problem.

I am rating this recipe 1-star for difficulty. These Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies are a basic drop cookie recipe. They are quick to whip up and quick to bake!

I got started by pulling all the ingredients and my utensils together. Man, what a list of ingredients! I think I pulled just about everything out of my pantry to make these cookies!

Mixing the cookie dough was as easy as measuring the ingredients. I mixed everything in my KitchenAid and then stirred it again by hand with my wooded spoon just to make sure everything was blended evenly.

I did have to google how to make buttermilk. It had been so long since I needed buttermilk, I just wanted to make sure I remembered how to make it correctly. I did! Super easy! Just mix in an acid (lemon juice or white vinegar) to your milk…1 tablespoon for every 1 cup of milk. Then let it sit for a 5 – 10 minutes before adding it to your dough.

Once all ingredients were mixed together, I was ready to drop teaspoons full of the cookie dough on my greased cookie sheets. It’s always a good idea to bake a quick test batch with just a couple cookies to make sure your oven temperature is set right and the cookies bake properly.

As I mentioned above, my test batch cookies spread out way too much, which is typical for baking oatmeal cookies in Colorado. I’ve had this happen several times before. So, I added some additional flour. A ¼ cup did the trick!

I tend to like smaller cookies, but I wanted these cookies to be like traditional or old fashioned oatmeal cookies, so I used a heaping teaspoon full of cookie dough to make a larger cookie.

The baked cookies turned out great! Can’t you just see how moist and chewy these cookies are? They taste just like I would expect oatmeal cookies to taste…oaty, nutty, and spicy.

If you are looking for a blast from the past cookie, definitely try these Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies! You and your family will be glad you did ?
